Fall through manhole injures construction worker

A construction worker is in hospital with leg and back injuries after falling into a manhole in the city’s west end.

Emergency crews were called shortly before 8 p.m. to the area of The Queensway and Highway 427, where a man had fallen some nine metres through a manhole into the sewer. He suffered leg and lower back injuries, and was partially submerged in water.

The confined space and need for a stretcher made the rescue difficult. After about an hour, EMS and fire crews managed to bring him out with a pulley system. He was taken to a trauma centre.

The Ministry of Labour, which investigates workplace accidents, has been notified.
