Fatal traffic accident at Spirit AeroSystems involved employees, sheriff’s office says

A 19-year-old Wichita man killed on a motorcycle in front of Spirit AeroSystems was getting ready to start a new job with the aerospace company, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Nathan Gibbs said Thursday.

Tayvon Starr died at the scene of the accident; it happened at around 11:50 a.m. at 4600 E. MacArthur.

Starr was headed east on MacArthur on a 1992 Yamaha motorcycle. The driver of a 2010 Hummer H3, a 35-year-old Wichita man, was headed west on MacArthur and was turning into a Spirit parking lot when the motorcycle collided with the SUV.

The driver of the Hummer and a passenger were not injured. Both work at Spirit, Gibbs said.

It’s unclear who had the right-of-way or whether speed was a factor in the accident, Lt. Steve Olsen said at the scene.

The driver has not been cited; the cause of the crash is still being investigated, Gibbs said. Starr was supposed to start a new job at Spirit on Thursday, he said.

“There were no signs of intoxication by any drivers at this time,” Gibbs said.
