Father charged in Peguis toddler's death free on bail

A Peguis First Nation man who is charged in the death of his 21-month-old daughter is free on bail.

The man was granted bail on Thursday. Bail conditions stipulate, among other things, that he must live with his mother and not be alone with any children.

The toddler died of trauma-related injuries in July 2014.

The child's mother has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with her death, while the father and an adult stepdaughter were charged with manslaughter.

All three adults were also charged with failing to provide the necessities of life. They were arrested last month.

The man and the other accused cannot be identified under a court-ordered publication ban.

The child had been in care of Manitoba's Child and Family Services at some point in her short life.
