Fiat Chrysler strike in U.S. could cause issues at Ontario plants
If Fiat Chrysler Automotive workers go on strike in the United States, they could cause problems for their Canadian colleagues.
The United Auto Workers union has given Fiat Chrysler a strike notice, after its members rejected a proposed four-year contract with the automaker.
Tony Faria, the co-director of the Office of Automotive and Vehicle Research at the University of Windsor, said that if a strike ensues in the U.S., there will eventually be spillover effects for Chrysler workers at a pair of Ontario assembly plants.
"Canada does get a number of parts coming from U.S.-based Chrysler plants and that includes engines, transmissions and various stampings from the U.S.," Faria told CBC News in an interview on Tuesday.
"At some point and time, if those Chrysler engine, transmission and stamping plants in the U.S. shut down via strike, then certainly the Windsor Assembly Plant and the Brampton Assembly Plant will run out of those parts and themselves [will] have to close."
