Fire engulfs house in Winnipeg's Elmwood neighbourhood

Flames tore through a small bungalow in Winnipeg's Elmwood area on Friday morning.

Crews were called to the fire on Jamison Avenue, between Watt and Trueman streets, around 5:30 a.m.

Flames could be seen burning through the roof at one point and heavy smoke poured from the home.

Firefighters initially went into the home but were pulled out when it was deemed to be no longer be safe.

"We went into offensive fire attack mode but the fire had spread into the attic and conditions became very dangerous for firefighters, so we backed them out," said platoon chief Doug Martin.

The house was empty at the time and there were no injuries. A neighbour told fire officials the owner was at work.

The homes on both sides of the burning one were evacuated as a precaution.

The fire was brought under control around 6:30 a.m. and has since been extinguished.

There is no word on the cause or the amount of damage.
