Cold and rainy weather made for fewer anglers working the concrete rivers, but Mickey Clements of Coyote Bait and Tackle in Morgan Hill said, “We have been selling a number of 1-ounce Rat-L-Traps for the California Aqueduct as anglers are working around the headgates.” Michael Crayne of Valley Rod and Gun in Clovis added, “There have been some decent stripers landed this week for anglers driving along the aqueduct looking for boils.”

In the south aqueduct in Kern County, Cope’s Tackle and Rod in Bakersfield reported cold weather kept most anglers home, butnightcrawlers or cut sardines are picking up linesides to 30 inches. Jerkbaits, Rat-L-Traps, or swimbaits are picking up a few stripes while catfishing is best with Triple S Dip Bait, chicken liver, or cut sardines beyond the head gates. Largemouth bass fishing is slow, but there are a few fish before and after the head gates in the slower water with either finesse techniques or topwater lures.

Michael Crayne of Valley Rod and Gun in Clovis reported, “There has been quite a bit more interest at Eastman due to a number of quality largemouth bass in the 6- to 8-pound range caught and released lately.

The bigger fish are coming on large glide baits or swimbaits near the dam, and rainbow trout patterned Huddlestons have been popular. The lake has turned over, and the water is dirty so the best action is toward the bottom at 30 to 50 feet in depth. From the banks, jigs or plastics on a shakey head or drop-shot are working best for numbers.” Hensley remains very slow for slow for bass with most fishermen targeting either catfish, crappie, or bluegill.” Eastman rose slightly to 550.40 feet in elevation and 62% with Hensley rising 1.5 feet to 469.90 feet in elevation and 18%. Monte Smith of Gold Country Sport Fishing continues to find solid action for rainbow trout trolling near the surface with shad-patterned spoons on lead core line.” Heavy planting over the previous weeks has led to improved shore action around the Blue Oaks and Fleming Meadows launch ramps.

Omega Nguyen of Mega Bait and Tackle reported rolling shad at depths from 35 to 40 feet has produced king salmon to 8.5 pounds while bank fishermen are scoring planted rainbows with live minnows.” Bass fishing remains a grind, but the big fish should be perking up with the recent trout plants. Big swimbaits and glide baits are the lures of choice for those willing to work the heavy lures throughout the day. Tournament action will start in earnest in the coming months. The lake rose less than a foot to 796.87 feet in elevation and 81%. Updates on the launch ramp are available at https://www.donpedrolake.com/ . 2024 annual permits are available now.

Bass 2 Trout 3 Crappie 2 Catfish 2 Bluegill 3

The lake held at 2,564.44 feet in elevation and 34% even though releases from the dam dropped from 446 to 366 cfs at First Point. Cope’s Tackle and Rod reported last week’s Department of Fish and Wildlife trout plant spurred on a steady bite from the banks with trout jigs, garlic-scented Power Bait, pinched crawlers, or spoons. Trollers are scoring with shad-patterned spoons such as Thomas Buoyants, Needlefish, or Flicker Shad. Bass are holding in deep water, and deep-diving crankbaits, trout-patterned swimbaits, or 7- to 10-inch plastics on a slow presentation are working for a few quality fish.

The crappie bite has slowed within the past two weeks as the slabs are holding in deep water structure. Live small to medium minnows or crappie jigs are working best with most slabs found around Red’s Marina. Catfishing remains decent with frozen shad, cut baits, or Triple S Dip Bait.

Heavy trout plants over the past several weeks have led to a good trout plant although the river flows have been fluctuating with the recent storms. The best action for planted trout has been from the park at Kernville to Powerhouse #3 with salmon eggs, live crickets, or nightcrawlers. Nymphs and dry flies on a dropper are working best for fly fishermen in the 20-Mile stretch. Largemouth and smallmouth action on the lower Kern is fair with small crankbaits or small plastics.

The lake rose 4 feet to 596.03 feet in elevation and 9%. Cope’s Tackle and Rod in Bakersfield reported decent action for spotted bass with plastics on the drop-shot, Carolina rigs, or Ned rigs at depths from 15 to 30 feet. Deeper fish are holding off the points and ledges, and vertical spoons or jigs are best for the deep fish. Catfishing is fair with the best options being cut bait, chicken liver, or Triple S Dip Bait while crappie are found on deep structure with live minnows or ice jigs. The flows in the Kaweah River rose from 118 to 172 cfs.

Cope’s Tackle and Rod in Bakersfield reported winter like fishing conditions with Largemouth anglers focused their efforts in deeper water with finesse baits, jigs, deep diving crankbaits, or vertical spoons. 4-inch Roboworms Green Pumpkin, Ox Blood, or Tequila Sunrise are also effective while spoons such as Krocodiles or blade baits worked on the deeper fish. Crappie anglers scored with minijigs or small live minnows on submerged structure spots in deep water while catfishing is best with fresh shrimp, chicken liver, or Triple S Dip Bait.

The recent heavy trout plants have spurred on action from the banks with Power Bait, inflated nightcrawlers, Atomic Tubes, or blue/chrome or gold Kastmasters. Limits have been possible when the fish are pushing into the shorelines. Trollers continue to locate limits of rainbows working shad-patterned spoons near the surface close to the dam. Kastmasters, Speedy Shiners, or T-Bone’s spoons are all working. Bass fishing remains a challenge, but the water needs to cool a few more degrees before the bite becomes consistent. Finesse presentations of jigs, plastics on a shakey head or drop-shot are best for suspended fish holding along steep bluff walls while working spoons or ice jigs are best for the deep fish on the shad schools.

Crappie have gone deep, but they can be found in submerged trees in coves with live minnows or minijigs. Catfishing remains solid at night along sloping banks with chicken livers, nightcrawlers, or cut baits. The lake rose slightly to 806.80 feet in elevation and 64 percent.

About 6,400 pounds of rainbow trout from the Calaveras Trout Farm were released this past week, and action from the banks has been outstanding due to the massive trout plant. Power Bait, nightcrawlers, or Kastmasters in gold or blue/chrome are working in the normal locations of the Brush Pile, the Handicapped Docks, or the peninsula near the marina has picked up with. Holdover rainbows can be found in the river arm near the Second Fence Line with Ruby Red Wedding Rings tipped with a nightcrawler along with spinners. The lake is at 91%.

Michael Crayne of Valley Rod and Gun in Clovis said, “The spotted bass bite has been slow overall, but the fish are loading up and gorging themselves on shad in preparation for the anticipated drop in water temperatures. Crankbaits or umbrella rigs are the top reaction baits while finesse presentations with plastics on a Texas-rig, Ned-rig or drop-shot are effective for the small spotted bass.

The lake rose less than a foot to 496.90 feet in elevation and 40 percent. Sycamore Island is currently closed for a winter break, and the park will reopen January 12, 2024. A trout plant occurred at Sycamore Island last week with another plant at Woodward Lake this week. The flows in the San Joaquin River at Friant are steady at 428 cfs.

With the recent trout plants., trolling continues to be outstanding with shad-patterned spoons around the shad schools. The planters are holding near the shorelines with the turnover of the lake. It’s about time for the big bass bite to emerge as recent trout plants have led to more opportunity for those willing to work big glide baits or swim baits in trout patterns.

Most of the action remains on the bottom at depths from 35 to 45 feet along steep bluff walls with plastics on the drop-shot or wacky-rig with a heavy nail weight. The recently built Kokanee Power New Melones trout pen received rainbow trout from the Department of Fish and Wildlife to fatten up over the winter. The volunteer crew from Kokanee Power worked hard to bring the fish to the pens which were located offshore. The lake held at 1048.71 feet in elevation and 82 percent.

Michael Crayne of Valley Rod and Gun in Clovis said, “The bass bite has been slow, but it is starting to pick up a bit with plastics on the Ned-rig or small Keitech swimbaits along with spoons in deep water. The Fresno Hmong New Year Tournament is this Saturday, December 30 th . Information: Kong Moua – 470-3332. Trout trolling remains strong due to the recent plant, and there are holdover king salmon to 18 inches being caught on occasion.

Most salmon are in the 12/13-inch range, but there have been some larger fish. Running with shad-patterned Needlefish or Kastmasters from the surface to 40 feet in the main creek and river channels from the Power Lines to Windy Gap are the top locations. The flows on the lower Kings at Trimmer have risen from 447 to 519 cfs, and trout action remains solid with spinners, Atomic Tubes, Power Bait, or nightcrawlers below the dam. There have been some larger brooder trout landed, and another trout plant took place last week. The lake rose 2 feet to 872.49 feet in elevation and 59 percent.

Striper 2 Catfish 2 Bass 2 Crappie 2

Mickey Clements of Coyote Bait and Tackle in Morgan Hill said, “Striped bass action in both the main lake and the forebay has slowed down, but trollers are working around the dam or at the mouth of Portuguese Cove drifting jumbo minnows for school-sized stripers. In the forebay, largemouth bass action has been very good off of Highway 152 by the Twin Islands by vertical jigging spoons, Senkos on a wacky-rig, or underspins with small Keitech swimbaits in deep water.

A kayaker caught and released a 22-pound striped bass trolling a P-Line Predator Minnows in red head/white body in the forebay.” Roger George of Roger George Guide Service said that the bite has picked up - as the lake level has gone up a little - creating some level stability.“ There are topwater, ripbait and trolling bites as the fish chase the bait. I guided 3 anglers last week for just 5 hours and they released 18 good-sized stripers in the 21-23” range working the 40-60’ depths in Portuguese Cove. Water temps are around 60-61 degrees .” George reported. The main lake dropped to 54% with the forebay at 96%. Shaver guide emeritus, Dick Nichols of Dick’s Fishing Charters said, “There was not a lot of fishing activity at Shaver this past week. In fact, I hear more are heading to Pine Flat Reservoir in a lower and warmer climate. But overlooking Shaver may be a missed opportunity to get into some good yearling and brooder trout action along with a good kokanee bite. The second-year kokanee become the 3rd -year fish on January 1st , and we have found good action from the island to Stevenson Bay along the Fisherman&#39s Club shoreline at 25 feet down in 45 to 50 feet of water with purple spinner hoochies, tubes, or kokanee spinners tipped with corn behind a Mountain Dodger. The weather is not going to be good for a few days with cold temperatures and on and off rain. Trying to get a trip in between storms could be beneficial.”

The Shaver Marina is closed, but the Sierra Marina launch ramp is open. A webcam of the Shaver launch ramp is at sierramarina.com/webcam-weather-page.html and for Huntington at http://www.shaverlakewebcams.info/huntington.html. The commercial crab season remains closed until at least mid-January although the commercial crab season will open in Zone 1 and 2 on January 5 in Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino counties. Rockfish season ends on December 31 so there is less than a week left to fill sacks with rockfish fillets.

With at least a 20-mile run to deep water over 300 feet, few rockfish trips have been taken out of this harbor. 10-crab limits remain the rule on the crab-only trips, and Captain Michael Cabanas of the New Captain Pete continues to return with up to 20 limits of crab. The Queen of Hearts and Ankeny Street have also posted limits of crab. Limits of Dungeness crab are also possible from the beaches from Pacifica to Ocean Beach with snares, but it will take patience and persistence for 10-crab limits. The Pacifica Pier remains extremely crowded on the weekends.

From the beaches, Mickey Clements of Coyote Bait in Morgan Hill said, “Surf perch fishing is outstanding around Santa Cruz and the mouth of the Salinas River with Mekeni Baitz Carlo’s Perch Candy (CPC) or Honey Badger and Lucky 13 motor oil/red flake grubs. Lucky Craft Flash Minnows are also working, but the soft plastics seem to be the top producers.”

The 20th Annual Sand Crab Classic Perch Derby on March 9, 2024, will open for online entries during the first week of January. The online registration has been filling up within 24 hours so interested anglers need to pay attention to https://sandcrabclassic.com/. All proceeds from the Sand Crab Classic are donated to the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project, a 501C3 volunteer organization that continues hatchery and advocacy operations supporting native runs of steelhead and salmon on the Central Coast.

The Derby features a great number of raffle and silent auction items, BBQ lunch plus trophies and prizes for winning entries in both Barred Surf Perch and Sea Perch categories. For Dungeness crab, currently only hoops or snares are allowed in Zones 3 and 4 from Point Arena on the Sonoma/Mendocino County line to Point Lopez south of Monterey. Chris’s Fishing and Whale Watching in Monterey will run rockfish-only trips until the season ends this coming Sunday, and after the New Year, they will offer sand dab and Petrale sole trips with the possibility of Dungeness crab. Their boats continue to limit out on rockfish working the deep water, either in the Monterey Canyon or south off of Point Sur.

California’s rockfish season ends on December 31, but when the weather is cooperative, limits of rockfish in addition to limits of jumbo Dungeness crab remain the rule. The commercial crab season remains closed in Zones 3 and 4, and recreational boats have the ocean to themselves with hoop nets.

Rittenburg Bank remains the hot location for rockfish, and the New Sea Angler out of Bodega Bay posted 32 limits of rockfish prior to 9 a.m. before pulling hoops for limits of crab. Out of Berkeley Marina, the California Dawn posted 20 limits of rockfish and crab on Saturday, and both California Dawn boats are loading up with limits on either their combination or crab-only trips. Also out of Berkeley Marina, the Happy Hooker put in 22 limits of crab and rockfish earlier in the week, but they ran crab-only trips for limits on three consecutive days prior to Christmas Eve. They are running a combination trip on Saturday, Dec. 30. Captain Jerad Davis of the Salty Lady out of Sausalito has also been scoring either limits of rockfish/crab or crab only, and he has a trip planned for December 30th.

Inside the bay, striped bass are the species of choice, and limits of lineside remain the rule for those drifting live mudsuckers or shiner minnows in San Pablo Bay. Leopard shark are another option with midshipmen, anchovies or sardines. The annual central bay sturgeon closure will start on January 1 through March 15. During this time period, white sturgeon may not be taken in the following described area between January 1 and March 15: That portion of San Francisco Bay included within the following boundaries: A direct line between Pt. The water in the California Delta is finally pushing the 50-degree mark, but the striped bass and sturgeon don’t seem to mind. Largemouth bass is another story as quality bucket mouths have been few and far between. Randy Pringle, the Fishing Instructor, has been finding ‘lights out’ striped bass fishing near Sherman Lake by either tossing 5-inch Optimum’s Bad Bubba Shad swimbaits on a ½- to 3/4 th -ounce head on the flats or jigging with P-Line’s Laser Minnows at depths from 20 to 30 feet over the schools. Alan Fong of Alan Fong Outdoors is also using the same techniques for numbers of stripers, and he has started working up north near Liberty Island.

In the San Joaquin River, Johnny Wang, manager of Turner’s Outdoorsman in Stockton, said, “The stripers are everywhere from the Antioch Bridge to Prisoner’s Point. Frank’s Tract, Mildred Island. Empire Cut, and around Rough and Ready Island. The key is finding the working birds, and the stripers are sure to be pushing up shad.” The stripers in the San Joaquin have been in scattered schools, but most of the linesides remain in the Sacramento River from Suisun Bay towards Rio Vista. The recent rains are starting to push the linesides further north in the system.

The Crappie Closet Tournament out of Holland Riverside Marina drew 9 boats in difficult conditions last Saturday, and only two 10-fish limits were weighed in. Crappie Closet will be hosting more crappie tournaments in the coming months. Omega Nguyen of Mega Bait and Tackle in Lathrop reported slow action in the San Joaquin River below Mossdale with most boats drifting live mudsuckers or bluegill in the central San Joaquin River. Fresh shad is over for the season, but they have plenty of frozen shad in the freezer.

Sturgeon fishing remains tremendous with multiple opportunities for success out of Pittsburg with cured salmon roe. Captain Steve Mitchell of Hook’d Up Sport Fishing has been putting his clients onto all the action they can handle with oversized and undersized sturgeon, but with the slot-limit now from 42 to 48 inches, legal fish are hard to locate. The Department of Fish and Wildlife will review sturgeon regulations for 2025 during the January 16th meeting of the Wildlife Resources Committee. Meeting agenda available via this link -https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=218003&inline=&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery.
