Five hidden spots to see cherry blossoms in Markham, Richmond Hill

Cherry blossoms have reached their peak bloom in the GTA, and while High Park is the most well-known location to view them, there are other places where you can enjoy these delicate pink and white flowers. Here are five spots in York Region where you can catch the cherry blossom displays:

In 2018, the City of Markham received a donation of 80 Japanese Sakura trees, which were planted across three parks:

• Milne Dam Conservation Park (8251 McCowan Rd)

• Markham Civic Centre (101 Town Centre Blvd)

• Rougeside Promenade (behind the uptown Market Plaza)

Last year, 2023, marked the 95th anniversary of Japan-Canada relations, and 40 additional trees were planted in the heart of Unionville at Toogood Pond, symbolizing the strong and enduring friendship between Markham and Japan.

Richmond Hill's Sussex Park is a less-known gem for cherry blossoms. Nestled in a quiet neighbourhood, this park features over a dozen Sakura trees, providing a serene setting perfect for photography. Unlike High Park, which can get crowded with tourists, Sussex Park offers a peaceful atmosphere.

Another hidden spot for cherry blossom, located near the border between York Region and the city of Toronto, is York University's Keele campus, where you'll find two rows of Sakura trees close to the Calumet residency.

In Ontario, cherry blossoms typically bloom in late April or early May, with the peak lasting anywhere from four to 10 days, depending on weather conditions. Be sure to visit while they're still in full bloom — before the rain sweeps away all the petals.
