Five teenagers charged in relation to Dartmouth stabbing

Police investigate 2nd suspicious death in Dartmouth

Five teenagers have been arrested in relation to a stabbing in Dartmouth June 18, and Halifax police say they got a break in the case after one of the teens was caught allegedly breaking into a car the day after the attack.

A 40-year-old man was stabbed with a knife in the abdomen in the area of Thistle Street and Wyse Road after he was surrounded by a group of youths. Police said the teens asked for a cigarette before the man was attacked.

The teens then ran away with the man's backpack. The victim was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The next day, police said in a news release, officers arrested a 16-year-old boy who was seen using a hammer to smash a car window on Mill Lane in Dartmouth. Police said he stole a purse and ran away, but officers found him and his hammer in the 0-100 block of Alderney Drive.

Connection to stabbing

Police said during the investigation they learned the teen might have been involved in the stabbing the evening before. Officers obtained a search warrant and searched a home on the 100 block of Prince Albert Road.

Police said they found evidence from the stabbing in the building, but did not detail what in the news release.

The teen was charged in relation to the stabbing, as were four other youths ranging from 14 to 17 years old. Those four youths, two boys and two girls, face robbery charges. The two boys are also accused of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Police have not said what charges the 16-year-old faces in relation to the stabbing, but he has also been charged in connection with the car break-in. Police also accuse him of resisting arrest and say he tried to trip an officer and spat at an officer.
