Gatwick Airport says it has had to close its runway due to a broken-down aircraft.

A statement from the airport said it is "due to a departing aircraft having hot brakes".

It added that its dedicated airport fire service is in attendance.

It is believed at least seven flights are waiting to depart, with some having been on the taxiway for an hour.

The incident involved a British Airways flight.

A statement from the airline said: "Our pilots took the precautionary decision to cancel take-off due to a technical issue.

"Safety is always our top priority and we apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused."
