This former Kansas Jayhawk could start 1st Chiefs preseason game if Chris Jones is out

The Kansas City Chiefs released their first “unofficial” depth chart on Wednesday, with former Kansas Jayhawk defensive lineman Daniel Wise listed on the second team.

Who is in front of him? None other than holdout and star D-tackle Chris Jones, who the Chiefs are hoping to lock up long-term, according to general manager Brett Veach.

If Jones continues his holdout through the Chiefs’ preseason opener Sunday at New Orleans, Wise could be in line to start.

Wise entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Dallas Cowboys in 2019. He begins his third season in the league, with two previous seasons primarily spent with the Washington Commanders.

He’s appeared in 17 games over the past two seasons; he has a total of 11 tackles, including five solo.

He’s started two games in his career, most recently in Washington’s 36-27 loss to the Detroit Lions last year. He recorded one assisted tackle.

At KU, Wise had a prolific career. Wise was an All-Big 12 first team selection by the coaches in the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Wise’s 2017 season was his best of four years at KU, with 53 tackles and seven sacks. He also paired with former Dallas Cowboy and KU star edge rusher Dorance Armstrong (10.0 sacks, 20.0 tackles for loss in 2016) to combine for more than 25 tackles for loss in both 2016 and 2017.

Wise is the brother of Deatrich Wise Jr., who has played with the Patriots in the NFL.
