Former VOCM anchorman Vince Gallant died suddenly in St. John's on Tuesday. He was 88.

Gallant was well known in Newfoundland and Labrador for his 35-year tenure at VOCM radio, where he spent decades delivering daily news in his signature, distinct tone.

Gallant's career spanned an incredible 65 years, and in 2005 he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Radio Television News Directors Association.

Gallant began his radio career in his home province of Prince Edward Island in the 1950s, before moving on to Nova Scotia, then Quebec, and settling in Newfoundland in the 1970s after accepting the position of news director at NTV.

In the 1980s he moved on to VOCM, a position he held until his retirement in 2019.
