Former RNC chief Joe Browne to run premier's office

Joe Browne, a former chief of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, has been hired as the new chief of staff for Newfoundland and Labrador's new premier-designate.

Paul Davis confirmed for CBC News that Browne is set to become his right-hand man.

"I have known Joe Browne for many years. He is a very capable man. He is a very strong leader in his own right," Davis said.

"He has managed a significant organization with the RNC. He has also worked in oil and gas over the last number of years."

Browne retired as chief in 2010, and has been working in the private sector since.

Davis, who also retired from the RNC that year after a 25-year career, said he wants Browne's expertise in the premier's office.

"He and I had some discussions over the last several months about his desires and what he'd like to do," Davis added.

'A little reversal in roles'

Davis and Browne have had a long professional relationship, going back to when Davis was a police officer and handled media relations for the RNC under Browne.

"A little reversal in roles," Davis joked about now getting to be Browne's boss.

"I've got great confidence in him, I know his abilities are tremendous and I knew that he would be an asset to this team."

Davis was chosen as premier-designate at Saturday's Progressive Conservative leadership convention, and will become the 12th premier of Newfoundland and Labrador.
