Fort Malden gets $815K from Ottawa for improvements

The Conservatives continued their spending spree in the Windsor-Essex area Friday, announcing infrastructure investments totaling $815,000 in Fort Malden National Historic Site.

The Fort Malden announcement was made on behalf of Leona Aglukkaq, minister of the environment and the minister responsible for Parks Canada.

In a media release, the government says the funding "will help maximize the use of available space, protect assets that support visitors experiences, and enhance programmes and activities at the site that connect Canadians to our shared cultural heritage."

In all, the government announced $1.86 million in funding for the local area Friday.

Earlier in the day Friday, Essex Conservative MP Jeff Watson announced five Windsor-Essex branches of the Royal Canadian Legion are getting more than a combined $145,000 from the federal government.

That announcement was made on behalf of Gary Goodyear, minister for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.

During the morning announcement, Watson said the Essex Region Conservation Authority will receive $400,000 to renovate the Essex-Amherstburg Greenway. The Town of Tecumseh will get $500,000 for the enhancement of Lakewood Park Trail Network.

The Harper government made several large funding announcements across the country in recent months. It's largely expected the Conservatives will launch a federal campaign as early as this Sunday.
