Fredericton high-speed chase leads to 2 arrests

Fredericton Police Force have a man and a youth in custody facing charges following a high-speed chase and a lengthy pursuit early Sunday morning.

Acting Sgt. Sean Clark said a Volkswagen Jetta that had been stolen Friday from a northside business was spotted on Regent Street at 1 a.m. Sunday.

When a police officer attempted to stop the vehicle, it sped up Smythe Street, went through the roundabout and proceeded onto Highway 8.

Clarke said the pursuit was called off when speeds and driving became erratic.

"[It] was both dangerous to themselves and the public and to the police officers trying to stop them. When you have a fairly inexperienced driver driving a 4000-pound vehicle at high-rates of speed, nothing good usually comes out of that," said Clark.

Two hours later, police spotted the vehicle on the city's northside in the Sunset Drive area.

Clark said a perimeter was set up to try and stop the vehicle but the suspects drove the car down a plowed city walking trail.

The car was ditched in the driveway of a residence and the suspects fled on foot.

Police called in the Department of Natural Resources K-9 Unit to assist in locating the suspects while continuing their search.

The two suspects were found after 45 minutes in the backyard of a residence.

"The resources required to properly do this is fairly significant. We had six officers in different vehicles in the second part of it trying to apprehend this individual and K-9 unit called out," said Clark.

The pair are charged with possession of stolen property, criminal flight and dangerous driving.
