Free HIV testing available Thursday in Modesto. Here’s where to get it

The Stanislaus County public health division and Walgreens are teaming up to offer free HIV testing Thursday in Modesto.

The testing event will be held at the Walgreens pharmacy at 401 Paradise Road from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. County health officials hope the free testing raises awareness about the importance of HIV testing and for residents to know their status, a news release said.

The event coincides with National HIV Testing Day. For this year, the annual June 27 observance adopted the theme “Take the Test & Take Control.”

There are 924 people living with HIV in Stanislaus County, according to California Department of Public Health data for 2022. That includes 57 residents newly diagnosed that year.

“Knowing your HIV status is essential for your health and the health of our community,” Dr. Erin Gustafson, assistant county public health officer, said in the news release. “By partnering with Walgreens, we are making testing accessible and convenient.”

More than 143,000 people in California are infected with HIV and about 4,000 new cases are reported each year. The virus causing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome can be managed effectively when detected early. Testing also is a tool for preventing the spread of HIV.

Rapid HIV testing will be provided at Thursday’s free event, with results in 30 minutes or less. The results are confidential and appointments are not necessary.

Public health staff also will provide educational materials, and people may connect with onsite resources around HIV prevention, treatment and services.
