Highway 10 collision between fuel tanker, 3 cars leaves 2 dead

A collision on Highway 10 in the Eastern Townships between a fuel tanker and three cars has left two people dead and three others injured.

The collision happened Friday evening on the westbound direction of Highway 10, near Granby, at around 6 p.m.

At the moment of the impact, the fuel tanker caught fire. The flames spread to one of the cars involved in the crash.

Firefighters on the scene said the car was incinerated. They were not able to confirm the number of people who were in the vehicle at the time.

Police confirm the driver is dead, but await dental records to confirm the person's identity.

Sgt. Gino Paré, a spokesman for the Sûreté du Québec, said that people in the two other vehicles involved in the collision were taken to hospital.

One woman was treated for shock and then released.

The man who was driving his car behind the fuel tanker and the incinerated vehicle has serious injuries and was transferred to hospital in Sherbrooke.

The driver of the fuel tanker suffered minor injuries.

Reconstruction experts were on the scene Friday evening to determine the cause of the crash.

Highway 10 near Granby is expected to be completely closed in both directions until Saturday morning.

The following detours are in place:

- Westbound: take Boulevard Pierre Laporte to Bruce Street, which becomes Simonds Street South. Turn left on Denison Street until the 139. Turn left on the 139 southbound until you reach the 10 again.

- Eastbound: Take the 139 northbound until Denison westbound. Turn right on Simonds Street, which turns into Bruce Street. Then turn right on Pierre-Laporte Boulevard towards the 10.
