G League suspends Stockton Kings’ Jaylen Nowell for game against Mexico City Capitanes

G League Stockton Kings guard Jaylen Nowell has been suspended one game without pay for directing inappropriate language toward a game official.

G League president Shareef Abdur-Rahim announced the suspension Monday. Nowell was assessed a technical foul and ejected after making the inappropriate comments to an official at the conclusion of the second quarter during Stockton’s 112-111 victory over the Rio Grande Vipers on Friday at Adventist Health Arena in Stockton.

Nowell will serve his suspension when Stockton plays host to the Mexico City Capitanes at 11 a.m. Thursday at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento. The Stockton Kings are the G League affiliate of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings, who will play the San Antonio Spurs at 7 p.m. Thursday at Golden 1 Center.

Sacramento signed Nowell during training camp and released him later in October. He remained with the organization after agreeing to sign with G League Stockton.

Nowell, 24, has appeared in 19 games for Stockton, averaging 16.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 29.4 minutes per game. He is shooting 42.4% from the field and 35.2% from 3-point range.

Nowell was the Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year at Washington in 2019. The Minnesota Timberwolves selected him with the 43rd overall pick in the second round of the 2019 NBA draft.

Nowell appeared in 193 games over five seasons with the Timberwolves, posting career averages of 8.9 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists. He produced his best season in 2022-23, appearing in 65 games while averaging 10.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 19.3 minutes per contest.
