Gambo students channel Taylor Swift for energy savings tune

The Grade 3 class at Smallwood Academy in Gambo have channeled its inner Taylor Swift, in the hopes of winning an energy saving contest.

The students switched out the lyrics to Shake It Off, one of Swift's mega-hits, to create Turn It Off — their video submission into the Newfoundland Labrador Hydro's and Newfoundland Power's Take Charge NL contest.

The students said they had a lot of fun during filming.

"Some of us turned the lights off. I turned the heat down. And we also danced up the stairs," eight-year-old Rachel Harvey told CBC News.

"It was the first time I was on YouTube," said 8-year-old Amity Mazhara.

The experience has left Taylor swift fan Breanna Collins speculating on the chances their video might catch the pop singer's attention.

"I would scream! [And] tell her she should just try and save energy."

Teacher Paula Ennis came up with the idea after noticing the contest online.

"I thought it would be a really neat way to get the kids involved. They love using technology, and it was a nice little idea. And Taylor Swift kind of sticks in your head," said Ennis, adding the students seem to have soaked up the message.

"If I leave the room with the light on, they're quick to tell me I have the light left on."
