Georgia Viaduct reopens after crash jams traffic in downtown Vancouver

An early-morning crash at the bottom of Vancouver's Georgia Viaduct caused headaches for commuters making their way through downtown Monday morning.

A van lying on its driver's side was blocking traffic on Prior Street between Gore and Dunlevy avenues.

Vancouver police say the driver of a vehicle travelling eastbound had just exited the Georgia Viaduct on to Prior Street when he lost control and struck a power pole around 3:30 a.m. Monday.

Westbound traffic was soon reopened, but eastbound traffic was shut down until just before noon while BC Hydro crews repaired the damage.

Const. Jason Doucette said the only injuries were to the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

"Vancouver Fire and Rescue had to work to get him out of the vehicle," Doucette said, "[but] he was assessed by BC Ambulance and he had [only] minor injuries."

Doucette said police are investigating into whether speed or alcohol were factors in the collision.

Power outages were also being reported in the area throughout the morning, but BC Hydro says they have all been resolved.
