Musical comedy Girls5eva was canceled on its original streaming home, Peacock, but it was picked up by Netflix in 2022, which gave even more viewers the chance to fall in love with the show executive produced by Tina Fey. Created by writer Meredith Scardino, who also worked with Fey on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, the story follows a girl group who were one-hit wonders in the Y2K era. The pop stars get back together when their song is sampled by a huge rapper, and they decide to chase their dream again as middle-aged women.

The third season was released on Netflix on March 14, 2024. Months after its debut, fans waited patiently for a renewal announcement—but it never came. Netflix canceled the series instead of moving forward with a fourth season. Here’s what we know.

Has Girls5eva been renewed for season 4?

Sadly, no. Netflix canceled Girls5Eva without a season 4 renewal, Variety and other outlets reported on December 17. The news arrived nine months after the third season began streaming. It even appeared on several best of 2024 lists, including our own.

Busy Philipps, one of the stars of the show, seemed to hint at the series’s future on her podcast Doing Her Best shortly before the cancelation news.

“(Girls5eva is) dead. I’m just saying it,” she said in the December 4 episode, per USA Today. “If Netflix won’t, I will. I guess not enough people watched it or watched it the way that counts.”

She Philipps added, “Normally when you do a TV show, there's a contract and you have to let the actors know by a certain date or they are free to go pursue other things in first position. But we didn't have that deal structured. I know that all of us would kill to do more in any capacity, like a movie … or a fourth and final season. But I just think it's not, probably, happening.”

Scardino told Decider in March 2024 that she would love to come back for another season, if it were up to her.

“I would like to do one. I would like to see the story continue, assuming people watch it and love it,” she said, adding that she has “a notes app [full] of a bunch of ideas and things.” However, there's been no official word from Netflix yet.

In a May 2024 interview, star Sara Bareilles shared that she still hadn’t heard any renewal news yet. “But do I want to do more? Absolutely. That part is truly out of my hands, so I’ve got to make peace with that,” she told Vulture.

She would, however, settle for a film installment instead of another season if that’s what Netflix will allow. “I’ve been pushing for the movie. I’m like, ‘Let’s Sex and the City this thing,’” she added.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in late June, Scardino seemed hopeful when discussing Netflix’s metrics. She shred that the streaming platform allowed Girls5eva to be “able to reach such a massive audience.”

“I think that it’s doing great,” she added. “But the barometer for a hit on a global platform is pretty high, so you want to see it gain love over time. I’m hopeful that it finds the comedy nerds and continues to grow.”

Where did Girls5eva leave off?

At the end of the season 3 finale, the girls of Girls5eva have actually seen some success from their efforts. They sell out a Thanksgiving Day concert at Radio City Music Hall, using semi-nefarious means on Ticketmaster, which is a win. But there is some tension in the group when Wickie (Renée Elise Goldsberry) unexpectedly receives some solo performance attention. Her song “Yesternights” has appeared in The Crown’s finale, upping her clout. The question is if she can bring the rest of the crew along with her to higher levels of success. Another season would have build on this decision for Wickie and her commitment to the group, and investigate what else changes when their dreams actually start coming true.

Who is in the Girls5eva cast?

The show stars Sara Bareilles (Dawn), Renée Elise Goldsberry (Wickie), Busy Philipps (Summer), and Paula Pell (Gloria) as the titular group. In past seasons, guest stars have included Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Andrew Rannells, Ashley Park, Bowen Yang, and Vanessa Williams.
