Gisele Bundchen Is A Purple Belt In Jiu-Jitsu, Actually

Gisele Bundchen reportedly wasn't pleased with The Roast of Tom Brady.

On May 5, Netflix dropped their live special, which essentially made fun of the seven-time Super Bowl winner for 2.5 hours. And while comedians, friends, and celebrities teased Tom about a wide range of things, some of the biggest jokes revolved around his ex-wife Gisele and her love of jiu-jitsu.

Kevin Hart—and many others—brought up the fact that Gisele is now dating her longtime jiu-jitsu instructor, Joaquim Valente—which, ouch.

“Gisele gave you an ultimatum. She said you have to retire or you’re done. But when you have a chance to go 8-9, you gotta do it,” Kevin joked. He then dove into how Tom allegedly screwed over his longtime coach, Bill Belichick, by leaving the New England Patriots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “You sometimes got to f*ck your coach,” he said. “You know who else f–ked their coach? Gisele. She f*cked that karate man.”

He didn’t stop there. “I mean Jesus Christ, Tom. One of the smartest quarterbacks ever played a game. How did you not see this coming?” Kevin said. “Eight karate classes a day and she’s still a white belt. F*ck Tom. The only bruises she had were on her ass. Everybody should have known it.”

Comedian Jeff Ross also brought up Gisele and jiu-jitsu, calling Tom a man “with so many rings he could melt them down and forge a sword to go on a quest to get Gisele back from that jiu-jitsu teacher.”

Now, new reporting says that Gisele didn't find the jokes that funny. On May 7, a source told People that the Brazilian was "deeply disappointed by the disrespectful portrayal of her family on Sunday evening's roast show."

"As always, [Gisele's] priority is to support her children who were affected by the irresponsible content that was broadcasted," they added.

Naturally, this ordeal has raised some questions about Gisele and her jiu-jitsu experience. Here’s what you need to know.

Gisele began training in 2021.

Gisele shared with Dust Magazine that she started jiu-jitsu training in December 2021 and earned her blue belt within a year. “I'm a very intense person, so when I enjoy something, I am committed,” she shared.

For evidence, see this IG reel, which shows off some of Gisele's work with her trainers the Valente Brothers.

Gisele discovered jiu-jitsu after taking her son to a classes and getting interested in taking them for herself.

"When I brought [my son] to the first class and started talking to Joaquim, I realized that it was much more than self-defense," she told Dust. "It felt very much in line with what I believe in and look for in my life, and how I have a path to develop and become the best version of myself."

What belt color is Gisele in jiu-jitsu?

The 43-year-old is currently a purple belt in jiu-jitsu, which she was promoted to in 2023, according to photos and videos she shared on her Instagram Stories, per People.

In one video, Gisele can be seen waving with a big smile on her face as she gets her belt. In a photo of herself cuddling with her son, Benjamin, and daughter, Vivian, Gisele wrote, “Thank you for teaching us this incredible art that helps us on and off the mat.”

The purple belt is the third of five belts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. (Black is the highest.)

Gisele and her instructor Joachim Valente have been dating since 2023.

Gisele and her kids train with the Valente Brothers, a trio of brothers that include third-generation practitioner Joachim Valente. Gisele and Joaquim sparked dating rumors in 2022, when they took trips together and were photographed in Costa Rica.

At the time, Gisele denied questions, telling Vanity Fair in March 2023, "I think, at this point, unfortunately, because I'm divorced, I'm sure that they're going to try to attach me to anything."

Sources close to Gisele told People that the couple started dating in June 2023 and “started out as friends first.” But Page Six says that Tom Brady’s camp claims that Gisele and Joachim started dating in 2021.

The model feels more 'empowered' since beginning the practice.

Gisele has repeatedly talked about the perks she’s gotten from practicing jiu-jitsu. In 2022, she shared an IG video of herself sparing with Joachim and opened up about her experience in the caption.

“I believe the more tools we have in our toolbox the better,” she wrote. “I feel stronger, more [confident] and empowered since I started practicing self-defense. I feel it’s an important skill for all, but specially for us women. Thank you @ValenteBrothers for being awesome teachers and for making training so much fun. I am looking forward to keep improving. Let’s go! 🤛🏼”
