GlobalMedic mobilizes to get clean water to devastated Nepal
Rescue efforts continue in Nepal after the devastating 7.9 magnitude earthquake on the weekend which has left at least 3,700 people dead.
While rescue teams continue to look for survivors, aid flowing into the country from around the world is being distributed to those in need. Canada has pledged $5-million in aid and will send its Disaster Assistance Response Team.
Aid groups say clean drinking water is one of the things needed most, and part of that relief effort is beginning in Toronto.
GlobalMedic, a disaster response organization in Toronto, says it has deployed its team based in India to Nepal.
A team from Canada will arrive later, bringing water purification equipment, distribute hygiene kits and non-food item kits and deploy field hospitals based on needs assessments, says Rahul Singh, GlobalMedic's director.
Close to 500 Canadians are said to have been in Nepal at the time of the earthquake, though there have been no reported deaths.
