Gordon Ramsay has revealed the injuries he sustained in a cycling accident in Connecticut and has shared a "very important message" with his followers.

The TV chef took to social media on Saturday to talk about the "really bad accident" and deliver a Father's Day warning about the importance of always wearing a helmet.

"It really shook me," he said in the video posted to Instagram, TikTok and X. "Honestly, I'm lucky to be here."

"I'm in pain, it's been a brutal week," he said as he raised his shirt to reveal a huge purple bruise on his torso.

Ramsay commended the work of the trauma surgeons, doctors and nurses who looked after him at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London before urging his followers to always wear a helmet.

"Honestly, you've got to wear a helmet," he said. "I don't care how short the journey is, I don't care the fact that these helmets cost money, but they're crucial. Even with the kids, a short journey, they've got to wear a helmet."

"I have very important message for all the dads out there…WEAR A HELMET," he wrote in the caption.

Ramsay, who has six children with his wife Tana, also shared a photograph of him taken before the accident, and of his damaged helmet after the incident.

Ramsay's popular Kitchen Nightmares series returned to screens last year after an almost 10-year break. The US version of the show — which aired close to 100 episodes between 2007 and 2014 — saw the famous chef visit failing restaurants to help turn the businesses around in a week.

The second season of the chef's US reality show Gordon Ramsay's Food Stars premiered on Fox in May.
