Grants announced for communities across Guysborough County

MULGRAVE – Eastern Counties Regional Library (ECRL’s) main office in Mulgrave will receive $250,000 from the provincial Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage to upgrade its facilities and develop a building management plan.

The funding was part of a series of community grants issued across Nova Scotia under the province’s accessibility strategy, Access by Design 2030, which seeks to prevent and remove barriers that Nova Scotians with disabilities encounter in their daily lives.

ECRL CEO and Chief Librarian Laura Emery did not respond to The Journal’s request for comment by press time, but in a news release, Guysborough-Tracadie MLA and Minister of Agriculture Greg Morrow on behalf of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage Minister Alan McMaster stated: “It’s important for everyone to have access to sport, recreation, and educational opportunities, especially those living in rural communities.”

“This investment is another step in creating healthy communities by supporting projects for everyone to enjoy throughout the year.”

Other funding announced for community organizations n Guysborough County included: $90,000 for the Chedabucto Snowmobile Club to enhance 15 kilometres of the Round Lake Wilderness Trail for multi-use access; more than $54,000 for the St. Mary’s ATV Club to develop a new connector route trail from Sonora to Sherbrooke; and $50,000 for Hazel Hill & Area Community Association to replace its community centre’s roof;

The Senior Citizens Shamrock Club in Canso will receive $18,000 to repair its siding, door and fence. The Guysborough County Trails Association wiull receive $12,000 to widen the McAllister suspension bridge. And the Whitehaven Community Association in Whitehead will receive more than $10,000 to install ductless heat pumps at the community centre.
