Grizzly and Black Bear Sightings in Swan Hills

Swan Hills’ human residents aren’t the only ones enjoying the beautiful spring weather. Some of our furry, four-legged neighbours have been sighted in and around town. A mama grizzly and two cubs have been spotted on the fire road and at the ball diamonds, and a black bear recently inspected the Four Seasons campground.

As spring brings an abundance of wildlife activity, the presence of these incredible but potentially dangerous animals reminds us that our community is nestled within their natural habitat.

Residents of Swan Hills are advised to exercise caution when out and about in the community. As we all know, bears (especially mothers with cubs) can be highly unpredictable and may pose a threat if they feel threatened or cornered.

Here are some important safety tips to keep in mind:

· Stay Alert: Be aware of your surroundings, especially when walking, biking, or enjoying other outdoor activities.

· Travel in Groups: Bears are less likely to approach larger groups of people.

· Keep Your Distance: If you spot a bear, maintain a safe distance and do not approach it. Slowly back away while keeping an eye on the bear.

· Secure Food and Garbage: Make sure to store food and dispose of garbage properly to avoid attracting bears.

· Carry Bear Spray: When in bear country, carry bear spray and know how to use it.

While observing bears can be a thrilling experience, it's essential to prioritize safety.

Living in Swan Hills means sharing our beautiful environment with wildlife. By taking the necessary precautions, we can enjoy the great outdoors while respecting the natural habitats of these amazing creatures. Stay safe, Swan Hills, and let’s all do our part to ensure peaceful coexistence with our wild neighbours.
