Guevera Wilson Clorina pleads guilty to murdering Chona and Gabriel Manzano

Guevera Wilson Clorina pleaded guilty Wednesday to killing his cousin's wife and her five-year-old son almost two years ago.

Chona Manzano and her son Gabriel were stabbed to death in their Evanston home on May 2013.

In Calgary's Court of Queen's Bench on Wednesday, Clorina pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, second-degree murder and sexual touching of a minor.

According to an agreed statement of facts, Gabriel witnessed Clorina kill his mother. Clorina then chased the child down and killed him in his parents' bedroom.

Clorina is a first cousin to Chona's husband Erwin Manzano. The family had sponsored him to come to Canada and trusted him to be a nanny to their children. Erwin says he feels betrayed.

"We give him everything. We help his family and for him — a better future," said Manzano. "This is how he pay me: took my wife and took my son."

Originally, Clorina was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He also faced charges relating to a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl over a three-year period. Child pornography charges were also laid in the months following the killings.

'He's remorseful'

There is a ban on naming the teen involved but she was pregnant, according to sources familiar with the case.

Court documents show Manzano may have learned about the inappropriate sexual relationship before her death.

Laywer Kim Ross says his client is sorry.

"He's remorseful. He feels bad for what happened and he's evidencing that by his pleas here today," said Ross.

A date for a sentencing hearing will be set next week.

The family is relieved to avoid a trial, which according to Erwin's sister Emmylou Nolasco was supposed to begin next Tuesday. She says it still doesn't ease their grief.

"It was just like yesterday ... it's tough for all of us."
