My Guilty Pleasure Is Finding Misspellings On Menus
As someone who writes about food for a living, there are certain small things that bring me pure, unadulterated joy. Food puns, for one, will almost always make me smile. I love whimsical recipes that veer toward the absurd. But the one thing that is guaranteed to make me laugh out loud, without fail, is a misspelling on a menu.
I write, edit, and mull over words all day. So it’s only natural that I’m quick to notice missing letters and jumbled words on a restaurant menu, and my gut response is to laugh.
It’s certainly not out of judgement, because I too am guilty of a spelling error every now and then. It’s the act of saying the words out in my head and sounding like I’m speaking Simglish that has me doubling over. Some of these misspellings have stuck with me for a long time and have even changed the way I pronounce certain words entirely.
For the past four years, my friend and I have compiled some of the silliest menu misspellings. We've even encouraged our friends, family members, and coworkers to look out for silly misspelled menus of their own. And our archive now contains nearly 100 different images from every corner of the restaurant spectrum, from New York City bodegas to upscale bistros to in-flight dining.
And in the spirit of giving, I’m sharing some of our favorite misspellings with you.
