Halifax hit with 55 to 80 mm of rain during weekend storm

Cape Bretoners braced for a repeat of the Thanksgiving storm, but for many, the wind and rain over Friday and Saturday didn't quite compare.

Rainfall totals in Cape Breton, a region which saw widespread flooding which displaced homeowners on Thanksgiving Monday, averaged about half of what Halifax County saw in the last 48 hours.

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality said Thursday its infrastructure could handle 30 to 40 millimetres of rain, which is about what the area received.

Temperature records for Oct. 22 were set at Brier Island at 19.3 degrees. The previous record there was 18.8 in 2007. The temperature in Cheticamp rose to 23.9 degrees. The previous record there was 19.7, set in 2003. The strongest winds were felt at Sable Island (93 km/h), Eskasoni (87 km/h), and Baccaro Point (85 km/h).

Flooding

Flooding seemed to be limited to streets, roads and backyards in Halifax and parts of Cape Breton. Many took to Twitter, posting about driving conditions Saturday afternoon and evening.

Halifax Water said Sunday it didn't experience any issues with their infrastructure during the heavy rainfall.

Street closures

HRM spokeswoman Tiffany Chase told CBC News on Sunday that "significant flooding" forced temporary closures of Robie Street at Welsford Street, Bedford Highway at Mount Saint Vincent University, and Pleasant Street at Mount Hope Avenue in Dartmouth.

Crews also worked to clear catch basins that had flooded on parts of Barrington Street near Inglis Street.

Chase said a tree fell on Scot Street near Desmond Avenue Saturday night, but it was quickly cleared.

When the rain got heavy in Halifax, some had to improvise. Someone was seen hopping in a canoe outside Scotiabank next to the Armdale Rotary in Halifax.

Power outages

High winds and continued rainfall caused power outages across the province early Sunday morning. From 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., the number of affected customers fluctuated between 1,000 and 2,500.

Sunday's forecast for Nova Scotia is windy and cool with a chance of showers.
