Harrison County escapee in custody, police still searching for suspect in Ocean Springs

Mississippi Coast authorities have captured one of two men who were on the loose Thursday morning — one who escaped a Harrison County work center and another who fled police in Ocean Springs, authorities said.

Alex Daniel, who police said has several felony warrants, fled Ocean Springs police on foot and remains on the loose, authorities said Thursday morning.

He was last seen at Clark’s gas station on Bienville Boulevard, police said.

His warrant is for felony eluding, Deputy Chief Steven Dye said.

Police tried to stop Daniel in traffic early Thursday on U.S. 90 near the Ocean Springs Hospital but he fled in his vehicle, Dye said.

Police deployed spike strips near Iberville Drive and Vermont Avenue, Dye said.

Daniel continued across U.S. 90 and down Martin Luther King Jr Avenue, Dye said. He turned on Government Street and fled on foot near Forest Hill Drive near the YMCA, Dye said.

A female passenger and child in the vehicle were not injured, Dye said.

Police called in K9 units to search but had not located Daniel by 11:20 a.m. Thursday. Dye said Daniel does not appear to pose danger to the public.

Police asked anyone with information to call the Ocean Springs Police Department at 228-875-2211.

Authorities earlier recaptured an inmate who escaped a work center in Harrison County on Thursday morning, announcing by 10:30 a.m. that the inmate was in custody.

Deputies had been searching in the area of Lorraine Road for 25-year-old Chase Lizana.

Authorities arrested Lizana in January on several burglary charges, Harrison County jail dockets show. He faces one count of grand larceny, two counts of commercial burglary and two counts of burglary of a storage shed, the jail docket shows.

He was off bond for the shed burglary charges and bound to a grand jury on his other charges, according to jail records.
