'Heavily intoxicated woman' charged after Dauphin truck theft

Inglis man, 73, dead after fatal head-on crash near Russell

RCMP have charged a 30-year-old Dauphin woman after they say she got drunk, stole a truck—with its owner in the back—and smashed it into a pole.

RCMP were called to 4th Avenue S.E. in Dauphin at about 9:30 p.m. on Aug. 22 after reports of a stolen vehicle.

The owner of the truck told police he was doing yard work when he heard someone start up his truck.

The owner leapt into the back while a woman in the driver's seat sped away. He then called police from his cellphone.

RCMP arrived a short time later to find the truck crashed into a hydro pole nearby. The truck and pole were damaged extensively, but neither the owner nor the suspect were hurt, RCMP said.

Police arrested the "heavily intoxicated woman." A series of criminal charges have been laid against her, including theft of a motor vehicle, impaired driving and refusing to take a breathalyzer.

She remains in custody. Her court date is set for Sept. 15 in Dauphin.
