The Duchess of Cambridge was the very picture of elegance during a recent royal family tour of Poland and Germany — from colour coordinating with Will and the children as they arrived at Berlin Tegel Airport to her $1,900 cherry-red, off-the-shoulder Alexander McQueen maxi dress for a garden party at the British ambassador’s home in Berlin. As it often does, Middleton’s wardrobe took centre stage during this tour, and she looked fabulous.

But it was a green Markus Lupfer dress the Duchess wore that has social media buzzing. The 35-year-old royal wore the printed frock while attending a reception at Clarchens Ballhaus dance hall, following a day in Heidelberg, on the second day of her royal visit to Germany.

But look closely at the print, do you notice anything about the details?

As Marie Claire pointed out, the intricate pattern on the dress features birds — eagles, in particular. The national bird of Germany is a Golden Eagle, so the dress pattern was a subtle sartorial nod from the Duchess.

This wasn’t the first time the Duchess paid tribute to a particular country with her wardrobe. During the royal couple’s visit to Canada in the fall of 2016, Middleton stepped off the plane wearing a diamond maple leaf brooch pinned to her blue fitted Jenny Packham dress. The precious brooch was recycled — reportedly given to the late Queen Mother by King George IV to celebrate their trip to Canada in 1939.

She wore the brooch again at a Black Rod reconciliation ceremony, pinning it to a long, waist-fitted asymmetrical red Preen gown. She paired it with a matching red clutch and heels, and kept her brunette tresses pulled back to show off a gorgeous pair of 18K yellow gold vermeil sterling silver earrings by Soru, handcrafted with baroque pearls and edged with Swarovski crystals.
