Highway 63 crash kills Edmonton teenager

An Edmonton teenager was killed on Highway 63 after his SUV slammed into a semi truck heading in the other direction Friday morning.

Police say the 18-year-old`s vehicle was just south of Wandering River when it crossed the centre line and hit the tractor trailer.

`Witnesses say he was drifting or crossing over centre a number of times prior to the collision. We’re not sure what that can be attributed to, either inattention, driving while distracted or trying to find a way to pass,” said Cpl. John Spaans.

The teen was alone in the vehicle. He died on the way to hospital.

The crash is the second fatality this week along that stretch of highway 63, nicknamed “the Highway of Death.” A motorcyclist was killed Sunday in the same area in a collision with a camper trailer.

Spaan said prior to that crash, it had been 11 months since his detachment had seen a fatal crash along that notorious stretch of road..

Work continues on twinning the busy highway that links Edmonton with the oilsands region around Fort McMurray.. Spaans said the RCMP, like many others in the area, are eager for the work to be completed.

“Like everybody else, we want to see this highway twinned. It will be a safer highway for everyone.”
