Hip-hop star Lizzo dazzles as Vogue magazine’s October cover girl - and makes history

Houston-born hip-hop star Lizzo announced on Instagram that she is the newest Vogue cover model.

And not only does she look luminous wrapped in a scarlet Maison Valentino dress while wearing Manolo Blahnik heels and jewelry from Tiffany & Co., but the singer is also making history as well.

“I am the first big black woman on the cover of @voguemagazine,” the three-time Grammy award winner announced. “The first black anything feels overdue. But our time has come. To all my black girls, if someone like you hasn’t done it yet— BE THE FIRST.”

Lizzo also posted other stunning shots from the photo shoot, giving fans a sneak peek on social media. In the profile, the songstress spoke about everything from police violence to her music.

“I want to make music that helps. ‘Cause that’s the way that I help,” she said. “I’m not a doctor, I’m not a lawyer, I don’t work in the government. I make music.”

Lizzo spoke candidly about racial injustice and what it was like for her at a young age.

“My dad taught me very early on about what being Black in this country is. When I learned about Emmett Till, I was so young,” she said to the magazine. “And I have never forgotten his face.”

The singer went mainstream in 2019 with her hit song “Truth Hurts,” which was featured in the Netflix movie “Someone Great,” and she was named Time’s entertainer of the year.
