Holodomor statue officially unveiled in Regina

More than 100 members of Regina's Ukrainian community were in Wascana Park today for the dedication of a statue recognizing Holodomor.

Holodomor is the term used to describe a deliberate famine created by U.S.S.R. leader Joseph Stalin in the 1930s.

Millions of Ukrainians died, up to a third of them children.

Deputy Premier Ken Krawetz, who is of Ukrainian descent, was part of a ceremony to dedicate the bronze statue of a little girl.

"We want to recognize those that perished and of course the survivors, those that have found refuge here in Saskatchewan," Krawetz said.

The statue was made from the same cast as the one that stands in front of the Holodomor museum in Kiev. It's just east of Regina's Legislative Building.
