Home Depot customer in Colorado gives dog treat, gets bitten in the face, authorities say

A Home Depot customer in Colorado was bitten in the face of a dog whose owner's say was being trained, authorities said.

The incident happened March 31 at a Home Depot location in Evergreen, less than 15 miles west of Denver, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post.

Inside the store, authorities said a customer with a dog asked another customer to give the dog a treat, telling them "they were training the dog."

The customer agreed and gave the dog a treat, but afterwards the pet "bit the customer in the face."

When Home Depot employees tended to the bitten customer, a woman and the dog were seen leaving the store.

The victim sustained "serious injuries" from the dog bite that required facial surgery, authorities said.

Dog owner identified, charged

After the attack, authorities asked for the public to help identify the woman seen with the dog. A few hours later, authorities said they were able to identify the dog owner.

"The owner would be held accountable for restitution or in the event of any enforcement action. For dog bites, the dog is quarantined at their home for 10 days, to ensure the dog is not exhibiting any behaviors associated with rabies," the sheriff's office said.

Jefferson County officials told USA TODAY the owner was holding the leash of the dog when the bite happened. Authorities issued a misdemeanor charge for dog biting off premises under owner's control.
