Homeowners hit with $5,000 water bills

Residents of an east-end housing complex got more than they expected with their water bills this month. The complex was constructed without water meters and residents say they have been asking the city to install them, and start billing, for some seven years.

This week, they got what they asked for, and their first bills came in at about $5,000 each, due in two weeks.

Homeowner Jim Barbour says he and his neighbours want to pay what they owe — but they question the city’s accuracy.

“They have given us all virtually the same bill, even though I’m a family of six and my neighbours are just two adults,” he said. “We know we owe money and we want to pay."
