Man charged with murder in neighbour's stabbing death
A 34-year-old man is dead and his neighbour has been charged with second-degree murder after an early-morning call to 911 led police to discover the city's first homicide victim of 2022.
Ottawa police and paramedics responded to a 911 call reporting a bloodied and unconscious man in the hallway of a six-storey apartment building at 2080 Russell Rd. around 1:15 a.m. Monday.
When police arrived and roused the intoxicated man, he allegedly told them he had stabbed his neighbour, according to police sources. Police then found the body of the man's 34-year-old neighbour, Silasie Pillaktuaq, inside an apartment.
The Ottawa police homicide unit has charged Curtis Kanayok, 31, with second-degree murder. He appeared in court on Monday morning.
None of the allegations against him has yet been tested in court.
