Hooked: Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce set the mood for summer style in cool crocheted looks

If you still equate anything crocheted to Grandma’s sofa blanket — did you see what Taylor Swift wore Sunday night on her post-concert date with Travis Kelce?

Did you notice what he wore to the concert Sunday and last week in Cannes?

Needlework fans, rejoice. Crochet is back.

After Kelce made a surprise appearance on stage at Swift’s Wembley Stadium show, the couple dined at Chiltern Firehouse, a hotel restaurant in London.

Swift wore a swingy, ‘70s-inspired Myra Crochet Mini Dress ($119) by Australian brand Vrg Grl, styled with a $1,225 Stella McCartney Falabella Bucket Bag and $920 Gucci Horsesbit slide sandals, according to Taylor Swift Styled Instagram.

The Vrg Grl website listed the dress as sold out on Monday.

“Taylor’s not a stranger to ‘boho’ styles like this — but it has been awhile since we’ve seen her give a bell sleeve dress a go,” writes Swift style watcher Sarah Chapelle.

“Over the years, she’s worn many loose minis in this silhouette. … This particular one is more mod than most thanks to its retro colour palette and crocheted fabrication.”

“In truth, it feels a bit closer to where I anticipated Midnights fashion to land — flipping between ultraglam pinup looks and rock/boho ensembles in the vein of Stevie Nicks with a side of patchouli incense.”

Kelce arrived for Swift’s third Wembley show Sunday wearing a matching shirt-and-shorts set of cream-colored crochet.

The Atlas Crochet Shirt ($170) and Atlas Crochet Shorts ($140) were from OAS, a Swedish luxury resort brand, Style by Kelce reported. Kelce paired them with Travis Scott Nikes and a vintage Olympic Team USA cap.

Kelce is obviously in a resort wear state of mind this offseason.

Last week at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity he wore a Thomas Crochet Shirt ($550) by Orlebar Brown, a British resort and casual lifestyle brand with a large celebrity following.

Jay-Z, Daniel Craig, Leonardo DiCaprio and “Bridgerton” star Jonathan Bailey are all fans of the company launched in 2007 by photographer Adam Brown, who favors bold colors, graphic prints, cotton and linen pants and crocheted tops.

“We hate to say it, but we told you so,” Esquire tweeted. “Our Big Black Book proclaimed Orlebar Brown’s Thomas Crochet polo to be a must-have garment to dress well this season, and the proof is in the pudding — just look at Travis Kelce wearing that very shirt at Cannes.”

The shirt inspired a fan of the Style by Kelce Instagram to beg: “If you could find dupes that aren’t so expensive that would be dope.”

Will you get hooked too?

Kelce stuck with the handmade-look of the moment for their date Sunday night, wearing a Mate Shirt ($275) and coordinating loose-fitting Richie Trousers ($390) both made of open-weave, waffle knit cotton — built-in air conditioning — from Swedish clothing brand Sefr. He topped off the ivory-colored outfit with a blue Louis Vuitton bucket hat.

“This couple loves a summer knit!” wrote Harper’s Bazaar.

“Were Swift and Kelce nodding to the crochet-filled wardrobe of the singer’s Midnights era for their late-night date?” pondered Marie Claire magazine.

“Or were they getting a head-start on dressing for a quick vacation between stops on the tour, which runs in Europe through August?”

Swift has a few days off before her next tour stop: three nights in Dublin starting Friday.

“Whatever the rationale behind their couples outfit, the pair are right on trend: Crochet fabrics have always been a warm-weather staple, but they’re getting extra runway nods in collections from Altuzarra to Stella McCartney to Diotima.”

Noting that Swift’s hippie-like crochet dress is sold out, the magazine reported that “similar options are filling racks at Shopbop, Revolve, and more. And no, you don’t need to match a football player to wear one.”
