Households in southeastern Manitoba to have high-speed internet soon

Thousands of households in southeastern Manitoba will soon have access to high-speed internet as part of a program to connect hard-to-reach communities, federal officials said on Thursday.

Treasury Board President Tony Clement, speaking in La Broquerie, said reliable internet "for learning, business opportunities and so much more is key to creating a more connected, digital Canada."

Standing alongside him, Provencher Conservative MP Ted Falk said the program, aimed at hundreds of thousands of households, underscored the government's drive to provide services to rural residents.

The program seeks to connect 98 percent of Canadians by 2017 to coincide with the 150th anniversary of confederation.
