Saskatchewan RCMP are attempting to identify human remains that were recently found in a rural area near Moose Jaw, and which have been there for 10 years or longer, according to experts.

Police say while they don't know whose remains they found last week, investigators do not consider the death suspicious.

According to police, a forensic anthropologist and pathologist examined the remains and believe they were at the location for at least a decade.

RCMP were called to a rural area northeast of Moose Jaw last Sunday at about 2:20 p.m. with a report that human remains had been found, according to a Friday news release.

The release does not provide more specific information about the location.

An investigation into the remains will consider historical missing persons in the area, and an update will be provided when more information is available, RCMP said.

Moose Jaw RCMP and the Saskatchewan RCMP's historical case unit are expected to continue searches in the area, and say residents may notice an increased police presence.

Anyone with information about the remains is asked to call Moose Jaw RCMP at 306-310-7267 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
