‘It’s important to celebrate success’: Orangeville hospital awards exceptional staff across departments

This year’s Headwaters Health Care Centre annual awards ceremony included four more awards to celebrate and acknowledge workers, teams and departments.

Headwaters CEO and president Kim Delahunt said deciding who would receive this year’s awards was a challenge as they received many nominations. Award winners are nominated by either their colleagues, community members or hospital executives.

“It was spectacular,” Delahunt said. “The energy was high, there was a lot of excitement and I think it was just very much embraced and it was really nice for the award winners.”

Headwaters staff have voiced that they want to be recognized for the work they do and have the opportunity to recognize their peers and teams.

One of the hospital’s pillars from its strategic plan is culture and recognition. Delahunt said they are always looking for new ways to acknowledge people, which is why they introduced new roles.

“We want people to feel valued and but then we also want to recognize those individuals for going above and beyond,” Delahunt said. “It’s always important to acknowledge the great work that’s happening in whatever industry you work in — acknowledge the individuals, the teams, give them something to strive for.”

Jennifer Hamilton, director of communication and stakeholder relations at Headwaters, said awards are not only for the clinical staff and anyone can receive one. Nursing scholarships are handed out each year as well to support staff in advancing their career.

“It’s important to celebrate success,” Delahunt said. “To take the time out to celebrate because we’re always focused on fixing crises or problems but it’s really important to take time to celebrate, and honestly to have fun.”
