Injured puppy prompts $30K in donations to SPCA
The Greater Moncton SPCA has raised more than $30,000 in donations for a puppy named Jackson that veterinarians suspect was being abused.
The four-month-old Shepherd mix is being treated at the Riverview Animal Hospital after being dropped off last week with two broken legs and fractured ribs.
Jackson had surgery on a hip joint on Monday, said SPCA executive director Karen Nelson.
People right across the country have opened up their wallets to pay for his $3,000 medical bill, she said.
"The donations are still coming in through the front door, over the phone and on our website. The support for little Jackson has been amazing, heart-warming, overwhelming, all of those things."
The money will be used to pay for Jackson's treatment, and any left over will be banked to pay for the medical expenses of other animals rescued by the SPCA, said Nelson.
Meanwhile, the RCMP is still investigating Jackson's case. No charges have been laid.
Veterinarian Liane Nelson says Jackson is recovering well.
"They removed the portion of his hip that was fractured so that it will help him be much more comfortable and improve his mobility," she said.
Jackson may require more surgery to repair his other broken hind leg, said Nelson.
His fractured ribs, abrasions and facial injuries will also take time to heal, she said.
Once Jackson has recovered, he'll be adopted by a nurse he's bonded with at the clinic.
