Innovative 'doorbell' helps fish navigate canal locks
A town in the Netherlands has devised a creative solution to an ongoing problem.
Utrecht has a canal with a lock that is usually closed, except that fish must get through during spawning season.
It's not feasible to keep the lock open, so they've set up a camera to monitor when there are fish at the door.
They've put the camera online, so anyone watching who sees a fish can alert the town by pressing the fish doorbell, or Visdeurbel, in Dutch.
Once enough fish are gathered, the lock will open and let them pass.
The doorbell has become so popular that people worldwide visit the website daily, looking for fish.
And, if you strike out and don't see any fish, don't worry. A YouTube channel will show the week's highlights with commentary.
