Jake Gyllenhaal’s ‘Road House’ Remake Smacks Down the Streaming Competition | Charts
One of the biggest critiques aimed at Hollywood these days is its overreliance on remakes and familiar IP. Of course, studios and streaming platforms maintain this strategy because it works.
Case in point: “Road House,” Amazon Prime Video’s remake of the 1989 cult classic, sits atop the streaming chart in the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report for the week of March 18 to 24. Jake Gyllenhaal’s turn filling Patrick Swayze’s shoes as a small-town bouncer was enough to draw 2.3 million households to watch the movie between March 21, when it was added to Amazon’s library, and March 24. That is a major streaming hit, particularly for a film that got a lukewarm reception from critics.
In second place this week is “Shōgun,” which has proved to be a smash hit for Hulu. In its four weeks on the chart, “Shōgun” has fallen no lower than the third spot. Another series with staying power – Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” – swapped places with “Shōgun” this week, falling from No. 2 to No. 3. Still, the Guy Ritchie series has remained in the top half of the chart since it debuted three weeks ago.
The luck of the Irish helped Lindsay Lohan’s “Irish Wish” on Netflix move up to No. 4 place this week. That’s followed by two new series on Netflix, “Homicide: New York” and “3 Body Problem.” “Homicide: New York,” a true-crime docuseries from “Law & Order” creator Dick Wolf landed at No. 5 place this week, while “3 Body Problem,” the mind-bending adaptation of the popular science fiction novels, was No. 6. “Damsel,” the Netflix fantasy flick that topped the chart last week, is No. 7.
Two family-friendly Disney+ programs also made the chart this week as well. Season three of the popular kids’ show “Bluey” is No. 8, bumping “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” down to No. 9 this week.
The final entry on our chart comes from Paramount+, which drew a strong audience for the second season of “Halo,” its adaptation of the video game franchise.
While the streaming chart is full of unexpected hits, there are few surprises on linear. “The Voice” continues to dominate and retains the top spot on the chart, followed by “American Idol.”
CBS’s “FBI” is the most popular scripted show of the week, coming in at No. 3. The other scripted programming this week comes from well-known franchises. “Chicago Med” is No. 6, followed by “Chicago Fire” at No. 7 and “CSI: Vegas” at No. 8.
The one non-scripted program that leaps out this week comes from someone who’s no stranger to dominating TV. “An Oprah Special: Shame, Blame, and the Weight Loss Revolution” is No. 4.
Rounding out our chart are ABC’s stalwarts “Wheel of Fortune” at No. 9, followed by “The Bachelor” in tenth.
