Jennifer Lawrence Says the Big Bags of the 2010s Are So Back

MEGA

Sorry to all my tiny-bag girlies, who may or may not have an itty-bitty Jacquemus “purse” on their dresser right now. Jennifer Lawrence, harbinger of It girl trends, was photographed on June 25 wearing a tote so ludicrously capacious it could double as a weekender. This black bag is a carry-on, not a personal item.

The purse in question is the Oversized Nubuck Satchel from Byron Bay–based Australian bag makers St. Agni. The tote, which features a single crossbody strap secured with an oversized silver buckle, will set you back a cool $405, which is probably reasonable considering the massive amount of leather used in its construction.

Lawrence styled her big, big bag with—what else—oversized separates, including a khaki men’s shirt layered over a loose crewneck tee and a pair of butter yellow drawstring pants that appeared to drag on the ground behind her like the puddle pants of my millennial youth. Who needs a street sweeper when Jennifer Lawrence is out on the town? The 33-year-old completed the look, which is essentially daytime pajamas, with a pair of black slippers and boxy black sunglasses.

The slouchy, single-strap tote (also referred to as a hobo bag) has been a favorite of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, founders of Lawrence’s favorite high-fashion brand, The Row, for well over a decade, so perhaps it was only a matter of time before the Oscar winner adopted the silhouette for herself. And before you balk at the idea that this staple of the indie-sleaze era has really returned, remember: Lawrence was one of the first celebrities to wear Alaïa’s mesh ballet flats last summer, and now that style is everywhere. The time to start lifting weights is now. Your shoulders will thank you later.
