John Mayer finally addresses Jessica Simpson's book: 'I've heard some bits'

John Mayer has broken his silence about Jessica Simpson’s tell-all book. It was the musician’s BFF, Andy Cohen, who got Mayer to open up.

In Open Book, Simpson claimed Mayer “was obsessed with me, sexually and emotionally,” among other things. While playing a game of “Never Have I Ever” on Watch What Happens Live, the “Gravity” singer admitted he’s aware of some of what Simpson wrote.

“I’ve heard about it. I’ve heard some bits,” Mayer shared. “But as Pee Wee Herman says in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure before the movie of his life is about to play out at the end, he’s not watching the movie and the reason he’s not watching the movie, he says, ‘I don’t have to watch it, Dottie, I lived it.’ And I think that’s prescient here.”

Simpson, now a best-selling author, didn’t hold back when writing her memoir. She addressed alcohol addiction, sexual abuse and those high-profile relationships. Of course, that included her romance with Mayer. The singers began dating in 2006 after her divorce from Nick Lachey. Simpson, who admitted to striking up a flirty relationship with Mayer while married in 2005, claimed he told her “he wanted to have all of me or nothing.”

According to Simpson, she and Mayer broke up “close to 9 times.” Although they had other relationships after seemingly splitting in 2007, they kept getting back together. It wasn’t until 2010 after Mayer’s infamous Playboy interview — where he called her “sexual napalm,” saying she was “like crack cocaine to me” — that Simpson deleted his number for good.

"I didn't accept his apology,” Simpson wrote of the humiliation. “I deleted all his contact information from my phone. I was done with this man in a way I never thought was possible. When he reached out to me, I changed my number and changed my email. Delete."

Anecdotes from Simpson’s book made headlines for weeks with many wondering if Mayer would respond. Maybe he’ll elaborate more if self-isolation causes him to write a memoir of his own.
