This Johnson County department store closed in 2020. Now outdoor retailer is moving in

Outdoor retailer Sierra will open its second Johnson County store in a former Stein Mart department store space.

Formerly called Sierra Trading Post, Sierra filed an application with the city of Lenexa to open at 9656 Quivira Road in the Orchard Corners Shopping Center. It will neighbor an existing TJ Maxx and HomeGoods.

Sierra is owned by TJX Companies, which owns TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods and Homesense. It sells athletic clothing, as well as hiking and camping gear.

Spirit Halloween had a temporary lease in the space after Stein Mart closed.

Sierra’s only other Kansas City area location opened in May at 7860 W. 161th St., Suite J101, in Overland Park’s Bluhawk development.

It has locations in several other states, including in Wyoming, Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois and Minnesota. There are none in Missouri.

Drawings submitted to the planning commission show pet supply store Petco moving into the other half of the Stein Mart space.

Florida-based Stein Mart opened in the space in 2009. It operated there for 11 years before the company filed for bankruptcy.

The company closed all of its nearly 300 stores, with its then-CEO Hunt Hawkins blaming a “challenging retail environment,” as well as the pandemic.

Stein Mart sold men and women’s clothing at discounted prices.

At one point, it had multiple locations in the metro.
