Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin’s Engagement Was a ‘Tough Pill’ for Selena Gomez to Swallow
Immediately after the news of Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber's engagement broke in July, photos of Selena Gomez living her best, carefree life on a boat named Justine were posted on Instagram. The clear message from sources in the following days was that Gomez was absolutely unbothered by the couple's engagement; she wished them the best.
But more privately, the duo's news was a lot for Gomez to take in, considering she had just been dating Bieber five months before in February and had been on-off with him for years. A source now tells Us Weekly that Bieber and Baldwin's announcement was “a tough pill to swallow [but] it wasn’t enough to break her.”
Gomez is currently not actively dating, the source said, adding that her more "wholesome priorities" and quieter lifestyle ultimately led to her final breakup with the Biebs. (This is consistent with what a source told E! back in March when the outlet broke the news Jelena's break was in fact a breakup: "Selena realized even though he's made some positive improvements, they just aren't a perfect match right now.")
Baldwin is a better fit for Bieber, Us's source said: “Hailey likes to go out, go to clubs, hang in the studio,” the source explained. “Selena is not that same person.” Jelena ended for good because they understood they were fundamentally different people, the source said, though “they learned a lot from their relationship.”
