Kanesatake daycare reopens with limited capacity

The Tsi Rontswa’ta:khwa Early Childhood Center reopened Monday with workers borrowed from the community’s education system, only a temporary solution to staffing issues that shuttered the facility more than three weeks ago, according to Mohawk Council of Kanesatake (MCK) chief Amy Beauvais.

“We’re looking to increase our permanent staff,” said Beauvais, who leads the daycare portfolio at council. She encouraged any qualified educators from Kanesatake or Kahnawake who are looking for work to contact her.

The daycare opened the week operating at around 90-95 percent capacity, according to Beauvais.

“The main thing I want to communicate is we are looking for additional permanent staff, and the daycare is open with the good graces of the educational department,” said Beauvais.

“We’re so, so grateful for that.”

Beauvais declined to answer whether the daycare’s closure or staffing shortage is related to an investigation by the Surete du Quebec (SQ) into a “possible incident” at an unnamed local establishment.

SQ spokesperson Marc Tessier confirmed to The Eastern Door this week that this investigation is still ongoing. However, the SQ has repeatedly declined to confirm the establishment in question, citing the need to avoid harm to the investigation.

Daycare manager Melissa Simon has not responded to multiple written requests for comment from The Eastern Door since the daycare’s closure.
