Kansas City Chiefs sign veteran QB Carson Wentz to back up Patrick Mahomes

The Chiefs are signing quarterback Carson Wentz, a former overall No. 2 NFL Draft pick, to a one-year contract.

The news was reported on the NFL’s X account, crediting Ian Rapoport. The Star confirmed the deal with a source close to the negotiations.

Wentz, 31, played his first five NFL seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was a Pro Bowl selection in 2017, his second year in the league, although his season was cut short by a torn ACL. Two years later, he set the Eagles’ single-season passing record, with 4,039 yards.

Wentz has been with three teams since his stint in Philly: the Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders and Los Angeles Rams.

He played for the Rams this past season, appearing in two games as Matthew Stafford’s backup. He played in the Rams’ regular-season finale because L.A. had already clinched a playoff berth.

In Kansas City, Wentz will back up superstar Patrick Mahomes, who has missed just four starts (two because of injury) in his six seasons as a full-time starter in the NFL.

Former Missouri Tigers standout Blaine Gabbert was the Chiefs’ primary backup quarterback in 2023.
